MY TAKE ON THE BALLPARK
WHEN TRAVELING TO ANY MINOR LEAGUE PARK, HALF THE FUN ARE THE
LOCAL STREETS AND OUT OF THE WAY LOCATIONS THAT THEY BRING YOU TO. WHEN GOING TO SEE THE CANNONS IT ISN'T LIKE THAT. ONCE
OFF I-95 THE NEXT 5 MILES ARE SPENT ON THE PRINCE WILLIAM PARKWAY DRIVING PAST STRIP MALLS WITH EVERY STORE AND RESTAURANT
IMAGINABLE. MOST OF THE RESTAURANTS ARE OPEN AFTER THE GAME SO YOU WILL HAVE NO SHORTAGE OF CHOICES ON WHAT TYPE OF FOOD TO
EAT.
AFTER THE STRIP MALLS, DON'T BOTHER LOOKING FOR LIGHT TOWERS, THE FIELD IS ABOUT A MILE OFF THE ROAD. WHEN YOU
PULL INTO THE PARKING LOT, YOU DRIVE TO THE BACK AND PAY $3 ...YES, $3 FOR THE CAROLINA LEAGUE! BEYOND A ROW OF EVERGREENS
LIES THE STADIUM PARKING LOT. IN FRONT OF YOU ARE 2 BASEBALL FIELDS, BEHIND THEM SITS G RICHARD PFITZNER STADIUM.
A WALK DOWN A SOFT HILL AND PAST TWO SOFTBALL FIELDS LIES THE STADIUM
A LOT LIKE THE OLD BEEHIVE FIELD, EXCEPT HERE THEY USED METAL .... A LOT OF METAL. THE STADIUM, BUILT IN 1984, THE SAME YEAR
AS BEEHIVE, LOOKS LIKE IT WAS PUT TOGETHER AS THE NEED FOR SEATS HEIGHTENED. THE MAIN GRANDSTAND AREA EXTENDS FROM DUGOUT
TO DUGOUT WITH 2 ROWS OF WHAT LOOK LIKE VERY UNCOMFORTABLE BOX SEATS IN THE FRONT. EVERYTHING ELSE IS BLEACHERS. BEYOND THE
DUGOUTS ARE WHAT LOOK TO BE GENERAL ADMISSION SEATING, AGAIN, ALL METAL. NONE OF THE SEATING AREA IS COVERED SO THERE IS NO
ESCAPE ONCE INSIDE, FROM THE RAIN OR THE SUN. JUDGING BY ALL OF THE METAL HERE, THIS PLACE MUST BE REAL HOT IN THE SUMMER.
THE SCOREBOARD HERE WAS MORE OF THE SAME BASIC TYPE FOR THE BALLPARK,
A SIMPLE LINE SCORE AND MESSAGE BOARD ABOVE IT. HEY, THE LINE SCORE IS UP THE WHOLE GAME, SOMETHING THAT IS HAPPENING LESS
AND LESS THESE DAYS.
IF YOU ARE HUNGARY AT"THE PFITZ" WELL, A RUN AWAY FROM THE GAME TO THE CONCOURSE
AREA THAT YOU WALKED PAST ON THE WAY IN SELLS BASIC BALLPARK FARE, NOT CHEAP ... NOT GOOD. THE FIELD HERE LOOKS REAL GOOD
AND THE PEOPLE HERE ARE REALLY EXTRA NICE. AS FOR EVERYTHING ELSE, JUST A REMINDER OF HOW BAD THE 1980'S WERE FOR MINOR LEAGUE
BASEBALL.
